Following
on from the successes in
Europe and Russia and
their merge with Mobira,
Nokia
continued to produce
newer models. The Nokia
101 was the birthplace
of the new 'candy bar'
shape which has become
so synonymous with Nokia
phones today. Upright phones like the
DynaTAC and the Mobira
Cityman were abandoned in favour
of two main shapes: The
Motorola MicroTAC/StarTAC flip phones
and the Nokia flat candybar
shape. These two shape
formats now account for
95% of the phones we buy
today.
You
can see how
the model has evolved
from the 101 below into
the modern phones such
as the 6230. Sure, they
may have shrunk and
grown new features, but
the essential shape is
still there

This
was the first GSM phone
in this format produced
by Nokia in 1992
followed by various different models
and incarnations.
