After the initial success of the 8000
series Motorola introduced the 8500x which was superceded by a slimmer version in the form of the Classic and 8800
Early
8000/8500 8800 and
Ultra/Classics
The Classic went
by this name in the USA and eventually was
followed by the Classic II, Ultra Classic and Ultra Classic II. The names
really were inspirational. In Europe they used the model numbers such as
8800x, 8900x and 888 Instead. Mmm.
The Ultra Classic 2 and the 888 were the last of the upright
brick analogue icons we know and love. Sales of these phones remained strong in
the USA but the large format phones were doomed - they were losing ground to the far more
portable MicroTAC flip phones.
