On
the other side of the
world from Motorola's USA
dominance the Finnish
manufacturer of cellular
car phones Mobira came out with a
revolutionary product:
one of the very first
handheld cellular
phones, the 'Mobira
Cityman'
In a brilliantly
staged photo
opportunity, Mobira
arranged for the
then Russian
president Mikhail
Gorbachev to be handed a
Cityman to receive a
phone call. Ever since
this marketing coup,
Finns have referred to
this prototypical cell
phone model as the
"Gorba".
Mobira eventually
merged with Nokia, and
thus from the seed of
the humble Gorba grew
the world's largest cell
phone manufacturer,
while the Gorba itself
was all but forgotten.
These
are VERY scarce now and
command a very high
price. This was the
father of every single
modern Nokia which has
become the best selling
make of phone in the
world today.

Please
note that these phones use
the analogue phone system
and will no longer work in
the UK. They may work in
some areas of the USA but
American network are
reluctant to implement new
analogue subscriptions.
