Many companies provided these phones for their workers who needed to be always in contact. Today many employers would face litigation for the damage to health caused by lugging around this telecom behemoth.

This phone was the evolution from the very first 1970's phones which were usually car mounted or built into a suitcase. The car mounted phones were very large and complicated (and you would need a car to move them) These hand portables were the first forays into products which could be used in a car and then removed for the person who couldn't afford to be out of reach.
