4500x and 4800x Hand
portable or
'transportable' phones
were mobile..... Just.
Imagine
a car battery with a car
phone handset nailed to
the top. What you see is
what you get. These were
the true workhorses of
the early phone age. For
the rich and famous such
as Gordon Gekko there
were the DynaTAC phones
with small(!) size and
large price tag, But for
those who relied on a
phone for work, needed
longer battery life and
better signal in weak
areas, this was the best
solution. Many companies
provided these phones
for their workers who
needed to be always in
contact. Today many
employers would face
litigation for the
damage to health caused
by lugging around this
telecom behemoth.
This
phone was the evolution
from the very first
1970's phones which were
usually car mounted or
built into a suitcase.
The car mounted phones
were very large and
complicated (and you
would need a car to move
them) These hand
portables were the first
forays into products
which could be used in a
car and then removed for
the person who couldn't
afford to be out of
reach. It would also
help if you had the
muscles of the Mayor of
California.
